Why blue steel
Steel comes out of the quench hard and brittle — it will take an edge, and it will snap. Temper it to blue and it gives back some hardness for toughness: it bends, it springs, it survives the work. Most engineering organizations fail the same way a brittle blade does. The job is to put the spring back in.
